Talk: Kali Akuno and Sacajawea Hall at Partisan Collective
American activists Kali Akuno and Sacajawea Hall come to Partisan Collective this Monday evening for a very special talk organised by community union Acorn. Akuno and Hall are members of Mississippi’s Cooperation Jackson: A large-scale cooperative movement that fights for jobs and economic justice, in one of America’s most diverse yet unequal cities. The pair will discuss the progress they have made, the challenges they’ve faced and how their successes can be replicated elsewhere.

Tasting: Chinese Coffee at Takk
Manchester Coffee Archive, a regular night offering tastings of coffee roasts from around the world, returns to Takk on Oxford Road this Tuesday. For this session they’re offering free tasters of a range of Chinese coffee beans, providing a window into a rapidly growing industry in the country. If you have any rare roasts of your own, feel free to bring them along, as the Archive are always on the lookout for new donations.

Spoken word: Glen James Brown at Gullivers
Spoken word night Bad Language returns to Gullivers this Wednesday night, and they’ve invited novelist Glen James Brown along to read from his new book Ironopolis (pictured). The book mixes social realism with Teesside folklore to weave a story spanning three generations of life in a fictional council estate. There will also be roster of as-yet-unannounced local performers reading on the night.

Film screening: Do The Right Thing Screening at 70 Oxford Street
70 Oxford Street continues its run of screenings as part of the Manchester Crime & Justice Film Festival this week, with a screening of 1989’s Do The Right Thing. The film, which put director Spike Lee on the map, explores racial tensions in a New York neighbourhood. Following the screening their will be a discussion from MMU Research Associate Gavin Bailey and film scholar Dr Martin Flanagan.
